The possibility of Jadeveon Clowney returning to Seattle is gaining momentum as the veteran edge rusher remains a free agent. According to recent reports, the Seattle Seahawks are among the teams showing interest in Clowney, who previously played for the franchise and also has a strong connection with current Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald. The latest reporting comes after Clowney visited the Cleveland Browns, with NFL insiders also identifying Seattle and the Houston Texans among teams monitoring his market. At 33 years old, Clowney is no longer the explosive young star who entered the NFL as the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, but his recent production suggests he can still contribute to a contender. He recorded 8.5 sacks in just 13 games for the Dallas Cowboys in 2025, making him an intriguing veteran option for teams looking to add pass-rushing depth before the season.
The strongest argument for a Seattle reunion may be Clowney’s previous relationship with Macdonald. The two worked together with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, when Macdonald was the team’s defensive coordinator. That season turned into one of the best statistical campaigns of Clowney’s career, as he recorded 9.5 sacks and 43 total tackles while playing all 17 regular-season games. Clowney’s versatility also makes him particularly interesting for Macdonald’s defensive system. He can line up as a traditional defensive end or outside linebacker and has experience playing different roles along the front. Reports have noted that his familiarity with Macdonald’s scheme could make a transition back into the system relatively straightforward.
A potential return would actually be Clowney’s second stint with the Seahawks. Seattle acquired him from the Houston Texans during the 2019 season, and he immediately became one of the most recognizable players on the team’s defensive front. Although his sack total in Seattle was modest, he made an impact in other areas and became a fan favorite during his short time with the organization. The circumstances are very different this time. Instead of arriving as a young former No. 1 overall pick expected to become the centerpiece of the defense, Clowney would likely be joining an established defensive unit as a veteran rotational piece. Seattle has already invested in veteran edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr., while the Seahawks are coming off a championship season and have fewer obvious roster holes than they did during Clowney’s first stint.
For Seattle, the appeal would be relatively straightforward: add another experienced pass rusher without needing to give him a massive workload. Clowney’s recent production shows that he can still create pressure, while his experience could provide valuable depth during a long NFL season. CBS Sports recently identified him as a strong potential training-camp signing because of his ability to contribute both as a pass rusher and against the run.
However, nothing indicates that a deal between Clowney and Seattle is imminent. The Seahawks are one of several teams reportedly monitoring the veteran, and the Browns have already met with him while the Texans are also reportedly interested. If Seattle ultimately decides to make the move, the combination of Clowney’s previous Seattle experience, his highly productive season under Macdonald in Baltimore and his recent success in Dallas could make this reunion one of the more intriguing late-offseason additions in the NFC.
