A joyful weekend at Seattle’s annual Bite of Seattle food festival ended in tragedy after a mass shooting erupted Sunday evening near the Seattle Center Armory, leaving three people dead and four others injured, including a 2-year-old child. The gunfire broke out around 6:00 p.m., sending thousands of festivalgoers scrambling for cover as police officers already assigned to the event rushed toward the scene. According to the Seattle Police Department (SPD), investigators believe the violence stemmed from an exchange of gunfire between at least two suspects. One suspect was arrested at the scene, while detectives continue searching for another individual believed to have been involved. Authorities have recovered multiple firearms and say there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active.
The shooting occurred during the final hours of the three-day Bite of Seattle, one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest food festivals, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Witnesses described hearing multiple bursts of gunfire before crowds began running in every direction. Families abandoned food stands, vendors took cover, and many people sought refuge inside nearby buildings, including attractions within Seattle Center. Seattle Fire Department medics and police officers immediately began treating victims. Authorities later confirmed that three victims a 19-year-old man, a 44-year-old man, and a 56-year-old woman died as a result of the shooting. Four additional victims were hospitalized in stable condition, including the injured toddler.
SPD’s Homicide Unit and Gun Violence Reduction Unit are leading the investigation. Police say officers assigned to the festival heard the gunfire almost immediately and responded within seconds, providing emergency medical aid while additional units secured the area. Investigators believe the incident involved people shooting at one another rather than a random attack, but they are still working to determine the motive and identify everyone involved. Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or recorded video during the incident to contact the Seattle Police Department’s tip line as detectives continue gathering evidence.
The tragedy has shaken Seattle during what is normally one of the city’s most celebrated summer traditions. Community members, city leaders, and festival attendees have expressed condolences for the victims and gratitude to first responders whose rapid response helped prevent additional casualties.
