Seattle coffee lovers are reacting with equal parts amusement and disbelief after financial website WalletHub released its annual rankings of the best coffee cities in America—placing the Emerald City in a surprising fifth place.
According to the study, Orlando claimed the top spot as the nation’s premier coffee city, followed by Portland, Miami, and Long Beach ahead of Seattle. WalletHub’s methodology evaluated 100 of the largest U.S. cities across 12 key metrics, including the average price per pack of coffee, the number of coffee shops and donut places per capita, and accessibility to high-speed internet in local cafes.
It was precisely those metrics that raised eyebrows among Pacific Northwest locals. Critics point out that consumer-data rankings often penalize Seattle due to the region’s higher cost of living and expensive specialty espresso prices, while rewarding sunbelt tourist hubs for sheer quantity of commercial chain outlets per resident.
Despite the fifth-place metric ranking, Seattle’s historic status as the global epicenter of coffee remains unassailable. As the birthplace of Starbucks, early third-wave roasting icons like Espresso Vivace and Caffè Vita, and neighborhood gems like Café Allegro, the city boasts the highest density of independent micro-roasters and craft espresso bars in the nation. While Orlando might win on price point metrics, Seattle locals remain confident that the Pacific Northwest’s rich coffee heritage can never be out-poured.
