: The exhausting ritual of shifting clocks twice a year may finally be nearing its end for millions of Americans. The U.S. House of Representatives is officially scheduled to take up the Sunshine Protection Act on the floor, aiming to permanently eliminate the biannual “spring forward” and “fall back” customs.
The legislative push caught significant modern momentum after the House Energy and Commerce Committee overwhelmingly approved the core language in a dominant 48–1 vote, attaching it as an amendment to a broader transportation and vehicle modernization package. Championed by Representative Vern Buchanan and Senator Rick Scott, the bipartisan bill aims to lock the clock permanently on Daylight Saving Time (DST) across the nation. The measure has garnered notable executive backing from President Donald Trump, who has frequently lambasted the biannual shift as a costly, highly disruptive production.

Advocates argue that maintaining year-round DST offers major safety and economic boosts, providing extra evening daylight that reduces pedestrian traffic accidents, lowers crime, and curbs systemic sleep disruptions. Currently, 19 states have already enacted trigger-laws to instantly pivot to permanent DST the exact moment a federal repeal alters the Uniform Time Act.
However, the bill faces strong pushback from sleep scientists, the American Medical Association, and parent organizations who argue that standard time aligns better with human biology. Opponents warn that permanent DST forces children into dark winter morning commutes, pushing sunrises in several states past 8:30 AM or 9:00 AM. If the bill clears the House floor, it must still secure Senate approval before heading to the President’s desk.
