The University of Washington continues to cement Seattle’s reputation as one of the world’s leading research hubs after earning the No. 12 spot globally in the latest 2026–27 U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities rankings. The university also ranked No. 3 among all public universities in the United States.

The annual rankings evaluated more than 2,250 universities across over 100 countries, placing a heavy emphasis on research performance rather than undergraduate experience. Schools are measured using factors including global and regional research reputation, academic publications, citation impact, and international research collaboration.
For Seattle, the recognition highlights one of the city’s most influential institutions. The University of Washington has long been a driving force behind medical breakthroughs, technology innovation, and scientific research, attracting billions of dollars in research funding while partnering with major employers throughout the region.
UW’s strengths were especially evident across multiple academic disciplines. The university placed in the global top 10 in six subject areas, including No. 4 in Public, Environmental and Occupational Health and No. 6 in Molecular Biology and Genetics. It also ranked among the world’s best in Clinical Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Environment and Ecology, and Social Sciences and Public Health.
The latest ranking comes as Seattle continues to grow as an international center for biotechnology, artificial intelligence, aerospace, and healthcare research. University leaders say the recognition reflects decades of investment in research and global collaboration that extend far beyond the classroom.

While other global rankings weigh factors such as student satisfaction, employability, and sustainability, the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings are designed primarily to measure research excellence and worldwide academic influence. That focus has consistently made the University of Washington one of the highest-ranked public research institutions in the United States
