A 37-year-old man from Seattle is under investigation after being caught on video throwing a large rock at Lani, a beloved and endangered Hawaiian monk seal off the coast of Lahaina, Maui. Witnesses say the man allegedly hurled a rock “the size of a coconut” directly toward the seal’s head before walking away without remorse.
According to witnesses, when confronted and told police had been called, the man reportedly responded, “I don’t care. Fine me, I’m rich.” That comment only fueled outrage online and across Hawaii, where monk seals are deeply protected and culturally cherished.
Shortly after the incident, a separate viral video showed the man being confronted — and repeatedly punched — by an enraged local who allegedly recognized him from the original footage. While officials have made it clear violence is not condoned, many residents praised the response, calling it instant “island justice.”
The case has now been referred to federal authorities through National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the man could face penalties of up to $50,000 and possible jail time under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
