Seattle drivers are once again preparing for significant traffic disruptions as the Washington State Department of Transportation resumes the Revive I-5 project following a temporary pause during the FIFA World Cup. Beginning Friday night, northbound Interstate 5 will close between Interstate 90 and Northeast 45th Street, allowing crews to begin the next stage of preservation work on the Ship Canal Bridge. The closure marks the return of one of the region’s largest transportation projects and signals months of continued construction ahead.
The Revive I-5 project is focused on preserving the 60-year-old Ship Canal Bridge, one of the busiest sections of freeway in Washington. State transportation officials say the bridge carries hundreds of thousands of vehicles each week, making regular maintenance essential to keeping the structure safe and reliable for years to come. Construction was temporarily suspended to reduce traffic congestion during Seattle’s FIFA World Cup matches, but now that the tournament has concluded, crews are returning to complete the next phase of repairs.

During the weekend closure, crews will establish a new work zone that will shift construction to the two right lanes of northbound I-5. When the freeway reopens on Monday morning, drivers should expect long-term lane reductions that are expected to remain in place through the end of 2026. Transportation officials are advising motorists to use alternate routes whenever possible, allow extra travel time, and monitor traffic conditions before leaving home.
The construction is expected to affect commuters traveling through downtown Seattle, the University District, and neighborhoods surrounding the Ship Canal Bridge. Several northbound exits will also be unavailable during the closure, while express lanes will operate northbound only throughout the weekend. Officials warn that heavy congestion is likely across the city as drivers adjust to the new traffic patterns.

Although the lane closures may create frustration for commuters, WSDOT says the work is necessary to extend the bridge’s lifespan and prevent more costly repairs in the future. The project includes replacing expansion joints, repairing bridge components, and improving the overall condition of one of Seattle’s most heavily traveled transportation corridors. Once completed, the improvements are expected to provide a smoother and safer driving experience for years to come.
City leaders are encouraging residents to stay informed throughout the construction period by checking official traffic updates before traveling. Whether commuting to work, attending summer events, or heading out for the weekend, Seattle drivers are being reminded that planning ahead will be key as Revive I-5 enters its next phase.
