Seattle’s iconic Pike Place Market has another national accolade to add to its long list of achievements. According to a ranking from vacation-rental search engine Holidu, Pike Place Market was named the best-rated farmers’ market in the United States, earning a perfect 10/10 score. The ranking evaluated more than 1,500 farmers’ markets using factors including Google ratings, number of reviews and the variety of products available. The recognition is especially notable because Pike Place Market isn’t simply a traditional farmers’ market. It is a sprawling public market featuring farmers, fishmongers, craftspeople, restaurants, specialty-food businesses and independent retailers. That combination of food, history and Seattle culture has helped make it one of the city’s most recognizable destinations.

Holidu’s ranking placed Pike Place Market at No. 1, giving it a 10/10 score. The analysis examined more than 1,500 markets across the country using data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Google. Rather than simply ranking markets by size, the methodology considered their average ratings, review volume and product variety. Pike Place stood out particularly because of its enormous volume of online reviews. Holidu noted that the Seattle market had more than 50,000 Google reviews, making it one of the most reviewed markets in the country. That combination of strong ratings and a huge number of reviews helped separate it from competing markets around the United States.

Part of Pike Place’s appeal comes from its incredible variety. Visitors can shop for Washington-grown fruits and vegetables, seafood, flowers, specialty foods and handmade crafts, while also exploring restaurants and independent businesses throughout the historic market district. Holidu specifically highlighted the market’s fresh seafood, flowers, snacks and artisan offerings. The market’s history also gives it an advantage that few competitors can match. Pike Place was officially established in 1907, when Seattle created a public farmers’ market to connect local farmers directly with shoppers and reduce the influence of middlemen. On opening day, August 17, 1907, just six to 12 farmers arrived with produce-filled wagons—and they reportedly sold out by lunchtime.

More than a century later, Pike Place remains one of Seattle’s defining landmarks. The market describes itself as one of the oldest and largest continuously operating public markets in the United States, continuing to serve farmers, craftspeople, merchants and the surrounding community. Its reputation extends beyond farmers-market rankings as well. Food & Wine included Pike Place among America’s must-visit farmers markets, highlighting its famous flying fish, artisan cheese, flowers and locally sourced specialty foods. The publication also noted that the market includes nearly 500 businesses and attracts millions of visitors annually.

The new recognition reinforces something Seattle residents and visitors have known for generations: Pike Place Market is much more than a place to buy groceries. Its combination of local agriculture, independent businesses, food, crafts, entertainment and history creates an experience that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.
While there is no single universal definition of the “best” farmers’ market, Holidu’s methodology gives Seattle a particularly strong claim based on customer reviews and market variety. With more than a century of history behind it, Pike Place now has another national distinction to add to its legacy—and another reason for visitors to make the iconic market part of their Seattle itinerary.
