A large early morning fire damaged a three-story commercial building in Seattle’s Central District after firefighters responded to reports of flames breaking through the building’s upper floor. When the first crews arrived, Engine 34 found flames venting through several third-floor windows and immediately deployed a 2.5-inch hose line to attack the fire from the exterior. Additional crews entered the building to begin an aggressive interior attack while simultaneously conducting primary and secondary searches to ensure no occupants were trapped. Ladder 3 firefighters accessed the roof to check whether the fire had spread into the attic or roof structure and created vertical ventilation openings to release smoke and heat, improving visibility and safety for crews working inside. Officials later said the third floor, which housed offices and businesses, sustained the most significant damage. Businesses in the building reportedly include a bakery, nail salon, and pet care shop.

Firefighters continued battling hotspots for nearly two hours before declaring the fire extinguished at approximately 5:30 a.m. Crews then transitioned into overhaul operations, removing smoldering debris from the third floor to prevent the fire from reigniting. As a precaution, Puget Sound Energy shut off natural gas service to the building while Seattle City Light disconnected electrical power. Authorities also temporarily closed portions of East Madison Street to allow emergency crews to work safely and to protect the public from potential hazards around the damaged structure.

Investigators are now working to determine what sparked the fire, and officials have not yet announced the extent of the financial damage or when the affected businesses may be able to return. The incident highlights the rapid and coordinated response of Seattle firefighters, whose quick actions prevented the blaze from spreading further and helped protect neighboring buildings in one of the city’s busiest commercial corridors.
